The Devils Lake boys’ cross country team took first place at the Carrington Cross Country Meet on Tuesday.
It was the Firebirds’ third meet of the season, and the boys’ second straight meet taking first place. Seven teams posted official scores in the boys’ division. The Devils Lake girls, meanwhile, took second place out of three teams that had official scores.
The boys’ score was 39, 30 lower than second-place Rugby.
Sophomore Zane Bennett, as he did in the first two, finished as Devils Lake’s top runner. It was his slowest time of the three meets, though, with a time of 18:12.06 — good enough for sixth place out of 75 finishers. Noah Azure was right behind him in seventh, with an 18:31.52.
Adam Sobolik placed ninth with an 18:40.52 time. Fellow seniors Gerardo Sanchez and Ben Larson finished 12th and 15, respectively. Sophomore Aiden Ackerman fell just outside the top 15 at 20:02.58.
The Devils Lake boys had eight additional finishers, along with five runners who DQ’d. The full results can be found on athletic.net.
The top runner on the boys’ side was Langdon Area/Munich’s Brock Freer. His Cardinals took fifth place with a score of 115.
Four Winds also had one boy compete. Waylon Smith finished last among the 75 runners who successfully completed the 5,000 meters.
On the girls’ side, 41 runners posted scores. Fourth and fifth place both belonged to Devils Lake, with Riley Schmiess (21:53.68) and Dottie Goss (22:01.8), respectively. LA/M’s Olivia Lorenz (22:52.06) took eighth.
Aubrie Lebrun (16th place), Ealynn Yoder (22nd) and Elicia Nelson (23rd) helped fill out the Devils Lake girls’ scores. They had eight finishers and one DQ, total.
Devils Lake’s score was 49, only one better than third-place Carrington’s 50. Rugby was first among the three teams with a 29.
Four Winds’ Anna Young finished 25th out of the 41 runners with a time of 25:36.56.
