The Devils Lake golf team found its greatest improvement yet on Tuesday.
In the Red River Invitational, held at King’s Walk Golf Course in Grand Forks, the Firebirds placed 10th out of 12 teams with a +111. Their previous best had been +140. They beat Grand Forks Central (+135) and Valley City (+227). They were 13 strokes short of West Fargo Horace (+98). West Fargo Sheyenne won with a +33.
Ava Beck, Devils Lake’s top golfer throughout the season, set her personal best with an 84. She had previously broken 100 twice with a 98 and a 96. The mark qualified her for the state golf meet, which will be held from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1 at Prairie West Golf Course in Mandan.
Julia McIvor (102), Tylie Brodina (103) and Camila Quinonez (110) all set their personal bests as well. It was only McIvor’s second meet competing thus far, but she improved by nine strokes. Brodina’s previous best had been 107, coming less than a week ago in the Edgewood Invite.
Rounding out Devils Lake’s scores were Jackie Juarez (117) and Abby Troy (119).
The Firebirds will be back in action on Sept. 10 with an invitational in Fargo.
