The pre-school year sprint for the Devils Lake girls’ golf team is over.

The Firebirds competed in their fourth meet of the season on Monday at the Grand Forks Central Invitational, and they tied for their best score of the season (+140). Ava Beck and Camilia Quinonez both set personal bests, including Beck’s second time breaking 100 (96).

To begin the first year of the reinstated golf program, Devils Lake competed on six separate dates over a span of 11 days.

The Firebirds placed 11th out of 12 teams on Monday. They beat Valley City (+182) and fell narrowly behind Grand Forks Central (+136). West Fargo Sheyenne continued its dominance with another win (+16).

As mentioned, Beck led the pack, which was comprised of six Devils Lake golfers this time around. Tylie Brodina came in second with a score of 109. Julia McIvor — daughter of Devils Lake girls’ hockey coach Rob McIvor — made her golf debut with a score of 111. Quinonez was right behind her with a personal best of 112.

Jackie Juarez placed fifth among the Firebirds with a 118. Another debut golfer, Mya Walter, came in sixth with a 137.

Devils Lake has now used eight different golfers at some point this season. Beck, Brodina, Juarez and Quinonez have competed in every meet.

The Firebirds will now get a chance to breathe with more than a week without an event. They’ll get back to it on Aug. 28 at Edgewood Golf Course in Fargo.
