Simon Romfo is the University of North Dakota’s starting quarterback.
Early Monday evening, Tom Miller of the Grand Forks Herald reported that an updated release of the depth chart had Romfo as the team’s No. 1 quarterback.
Romfo, a former Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich standout and now a college junior, will be making his first start since he was a high schooler. He led the Cardinals to three consecutive state titles from 2018 to 2020, a stretch that included 37 consecutive wins. While he played sports for the LA/E/M co-op, he grew up in the tiny nearby town of Calvin.
The news comes after a tight quarterback battle with junior Trey Feeney and redshirt freshman Jerry Kaminski. UND’s previous longtime starting quarterback, Tommy Schuster, is using his final year of eligibility to play for Michigan State this season.
Romfo appeared in all 12 games for the Fighting Hawks last year — albeit in a very limited role. He rushed for 49 yards and scored two touchdowns. Romfo has made just three career pass attempts.
He’s joined on the team by his twin brother Grant, a reserve running back.
The Romfo brothers are two of five former Lake Region athletes on the Hawks. New Rockford native Bo Belquist is one of the leaders of UND’s wide receiver group, while incoming freshman Deng Deng (Four Winds) has also made some noise in that deep position battle. UND also returns Devils Lake alum and senior offensive lineman Jack Kuntz.
The Hawks open the season on Aug. 31 with a road game against Iowa State. Romfo, who grew up in a town of fewer than 20 residents, will be the starting quarterback for a game aired on Fox Sports 1.
