The brand new Devils Lake girls’ golf team got its second meet of the season going on Monday, with a two-day event known as the East/West Classic in Jamestown.

After the first day, Devils Lake finds itself in 20th place out of 21 teams with an overall score of +140.

Still, the young team has already seen some improvement. All six of the Firebirds’ golfers posted a better score in their second effort than they did in their debut.

For the second straight time, sophomore Ava Beck was Devils Lake’s best golfer. After posting a 107 score her first time out, she broke 100 in her second try with a 98.

Abby Troy posted the second-best Devils Lake score at 105. She improved all the way from 133 her first time.

Tylie Brodina came in third place among Firebird golfers for the second straight meet, bringing her score from 124 to 111. Camila Quinonez fell from second to fourth place, but still improved her score, going from 119 to 114.

Karlyn Rardon, who came in sixth in the first meet with a 141, posted a 126 this time and came in fifth for Devils Lake. Rounding out the Firebirds’ scores on Monday was Jackie Juarez, who trimmed her shots from 138 to 135.

These are all positive signs for the freshly reinstated golf program. Devils Lake had to compete among the biggest towns in North Dakota, many of whom have had golf for much longer.

Grand Forks Red River led the pack after the first day with a +26, West Fargo Sheyenne right behind it at +27. Devils Lake (+140) finished the day leading Grand Forks Central (+159).

Numerous Fargo schools were part of the fold, with the top being Fargo Shanley in fourth place (+53).

The two-day meet wraps up Tuesday.
