Devils Lake High School has a new sport, and it’s already gotten underway.
The golf program was reinstated for this year, with a girls team in the fall and a boys team in the spring. The girls’ team began action on Friday with the Valley City Invitational at Bjornson Park Municipal Golf Course, officially signifying the first sporting event of the fall season.
The Firebirds, who brought six golfers to the meet, finished 10th out of 12 teams. They had a combined score of 203 over par. The winner, West Fargo Sheyenne, posted a score of +43, while the two teams behind Devils Lake were Grand Forks Central (+237) and Valley City (+247).
The best individual score for Devils Lake came from sophomore Ava Beck. She finished with 107 strokes. Behind her was Camila Quinonez with 119, then Beck’s basketball and softball teammate Tylie Brodina with 124. Brodina, also a sophomore, is coming off a year where she won state tournament MVP in basketball. She’ll also likely be the No. 1 pitcher and three-hole hitter on the softball team, where Beck is the starting catcher.
Rounding out Devils Lake’s scores were Abby Troy (133), Jackie Juarez (138) and Karlyn Rardon (141).
Seven of the 12 teams that competed at the meet hail from the Fargo area. Among the towns that were represented, Devils Lake has the second-smallest population (7,161), narrowly edging out Valley City (6,566).
The golf season will keep rolling with a packed early schedule. The Firebirds are back in action with the East/West Classic, which takes place Monday and Tuesday at Jamestown Country Club. Including Friday’s meet, Devils Lake plays on six separate days before the school year even starts.
Full results of current and future golf meets can be found on the team’s Facebook page.
