The Devils Lake High School Boys Hockey team kicked off the season Monday night at home versus Minot High School. From the opening face-off the Firebirds seemed to be stuck in their own zone throughout the night. This proved to be problematic as they gave up 16 shots on goal with three finding their way across the line. Devils Lake trailed 3-0 after 1.
In the second, DLHS seemed to settle in and skate with Minot. Junior Caleb Schwab found the back of the net in the second period, giving the Firebirds their first goal of the season. The assists came from Sophomore Brody Parker & Senior Carson Hanson. Minot put one away to extend their lead 4-1 heading into the 3rd period.
Minot would put two more on the board before Senior Hunter Riggin would send one home. Senior Brendan Connor and Senior Riley Schlieve would get credit for the assists. Minot would out shoot Devils Lake 51-24 on the night and win 6-2.
It would be a quick bounce back for the Firebirds as the next night they would travel to Rugby to take on the Bottineau Braves. The Braves would get on the board first with a goal five minutes in. DLHS would answer back with two goals two minutes apart to take the lead. Senior Carson Hanson would tickle the twine with the first goal. Sophomore Logan Stokke would get the second one giving the Firebirds the 2-1 lead after the first period.
BRHS would tie it up early in the second with a goal of their own making it 2-2 after 2. A determined Devils Lake team emerged from the locker room and set the tone early in the third period. It would pay off in the form of a Sophomore Isaac Thompson goal at the thirteen-minute mark, giving the Firebirds the 3-2 lead. With just over a minute to go in the game Isaac Thompson would seal it giving them one more to put the game away. The final 4-2.
The Firebirds (1-1) will be back at the Burdick on Nov 30th to take on Grafton Park River in their first game after break.
