Devils Lake’s Ashlyn Abrahamson is being recognized on a national level.

Abrahamson was one of 25 players named to the All-USA Today HSSA Girls’ Hockey Team on May 9. All players named to the All-USA Team were automatically nominated for Girls’ Hockey Player of the Year.

The press release noted that athletes were considered based on season-wide performance, along with an emphasis on state playoffs and championships. Abrahamson’s special 2023-24 season helped Devils Lake make it to the state tournament, though it lost in the first round and ended up taking sixth place overall.

Abrahamson was far and away the best girls’ hockey player in North Dakota this season. She led the league with 69 points, while nobody else even reached 50. The second-highest mark was another Firebird, Siri Olson, with 49.

The separation in goals was even wider; Abrahamson scored 52 times, while nobody else had more than 27 goals. It was the third-most goals a female hockey player has scored in North Dakota since stats started being tracked.

Abrahamson is the lone representative of North Dakota on either the boys’ or girls’ All-USA Teams. Minnesota led the way with eight girls selected, while Maine had four. New Hampshire and Michigan each had three, and Wisconsin had two. Other states with a nominee were Alaska, Vermont, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

The winner will be revealed in August during a series of announcements in various categories.
