After finishing its inaugural season, the Lake Region State College women’s hockey team has hired a new head coach. Sawyer Diseth will be taking over.

Diseth, a Devils Lake native, was most recently an assistant coach on the Devils Lake High School boys’ hockey team. The Firebirds made it to the EDC tournament this past season. Diseth has been a youth hockey coach in the Devils Lake community for the last 13 years.

“I am delighted to welcome Sawyer as our new women’s hockey coach,” LRSC athletic director Jared Marshall said, per a press release. “We have such a strong foundation returning and it was important we find someone who could continue to grow the program after such a successful first season.”

The Royals went 7-12 in their first season, competing in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, which is made up of 58 teams among three regions. They were led by Logan Kraft, another Devils Lake native with a long history coaching and playing hockey in the area.

Diseth now looks to continue building what Kraft started.

“It’s an honor to be selected as head coach of the women’s college hockey team,” Diseth said. “The Lake Region State College men’s and women’s teams had an incredible inaugural year, and I am looking forward to continuing the high expectations for the program.”
