The Devils Lake girls’ track and field team placed fifth out of eight schools in the 2024 Sheyenne Early Bird on Thursday, while the boys came in seventh.

Bella Tangedal won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.27. Aubrie Lebrun placed third in the same event, with a time just over two seconds slower than Tangedal’s.

In the 300-meter hurdles, three of the top nine finishers were from Devils Lake. Ella Wass came in third, Sara Kraft fifth and Chaylee Hewson ninth.

The quartet of Tangedal, Lebrun, Wass and Kraft combined to win the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:26.73. Another group of Firebirds — Gabrielle McLaurin, Lebrun, Tenley Triepke and Dottie Goss — won the 4×800. Devils Lake also had groups place fourth and fifth in the 4×200 and 4×100, respectively.

Kraft placed third in both the long jump and triple jump. Hewson finished sixth in the triple jump, while April Miller finished eighth.

The Devils Lake girls finished with a score of 71, only four points behind fourth-place Davies. Sheyenne won with 169.5 points. The three teams Devils Lake beat were Fargo South, Valley City and Shanley.

The boys, meanwhile, had 26 points in a seventh-place finish. They beat Shanley’s 19 points and fell just short of Valley City’s 27. Sheyenne won the competition with 233.

The Firebirds had two individual runners finish in the top eight among three events. Saige Thumb placed sixth in the 400-meter, while Zane Bennett came in fifth and sixth in the 800-meter and 1600-meter, respectively. The quartet of Bennett, Noah Azure, Rylan Day and Gerardo Sanchez also competed in the 4×800 relay, and they placed second out of three groups.

A handful of Firebirds competed in the shot put. Marquese Dubois placed 12th out of 58 participants in the javelin, while Reggie Cavanaugh came in fifth in the high jump. Bennett placed fifth in the pole vault. Leo Franco came in 13th out of 33 contestants in the long jump.

Devils Lake has another track meet two days after this one on Saturday, April 6, at the EDC Throws-A-Thon at Cushman Field in Grand Forks.
