After the Devils Lake boys’ and girls’ track and field teams opened their season with a pair of co-ed meets, the girls participated in their own competition last Thursday. They were selected for the Williston Girls Indoor Invite, where they placed fourth out of seven teams with a score of 56.5.

The Firebirds were well-represented in the 400-meter dash, where Aubrie Lebrun placed second with a time of 1:06.05. Ella Wass placed third, while Isabella Tangedal came in sixth.

Devils Lake had one other top-eight finisher in the individual running events: Gabrielle McLaurin finished fifth in the 800 meters.

Three Firebirds finished in the top eight in the 60-meter hurdles. Sara Kraft placed second with a time of 0:10:45, while Mallie McCloud and Chaylee Hewson finished in sixth and seventh, respectively.

Two groups of Devils Lake runners placed in the relays. In the 4×400, the quartet of Tangedal, Lebrun, Wass and Kraft finished second with a time of 4:33.04. In the 4×800, McLaurin, Riley Schmiess, Tenley Triepke and Dottie Goss came in fourth.

Kraft and April Miller came in fifth and seventh, respectively, in the long jump. They also competed in the triple jump and came in sixth and eighth. Three other Firebirds had triple jumps of more than 30 feet, with Hewson, Triepke and Savanna Lebrun.

Williston won the meet with 121.4 points. Dickinson came in second overall with a score of 119.9, while Minot was third at 117.5.

The three teams Devils Lake beat were Killdeer (40.2), Minot North (30.5) and Watford City (18).

The track teams have a bit of a break right now before resuming action on Saturday in the EDC Indoor Meet at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Both the boys’ and girls’ squads will be competing.
