With the Devils Lake basketball teams wrapping up their seasons, the high school spring sports season is already getting underway with track and field.
The boys and girls competed in their first meet last Saturday at Concordia College. The girls placed second out of nine teams, while the boys placed fifth.
The girls finished with 91 points, 18 behind first-place Shanley. Third-place Wahpeton had 76.
Sara Kraft placed fourth in the 200-meter dash for Devils Lake, while Aubrie Lebrun placed third in the 400 and Dottie Goss placed fourth in the 800. Riley Schmiess was one of two runners at the meet to compete in the 3200.
Three teams of Firebirds competed in the 4×200 relay, which was comprised of eight teams total. The quartet of Isabella Tangedal, Mallie McCloud, Gabrielle McLaurin and Kraft placed fourth, while the other two Devils Lake groups placed sixth and seventh.
Devils Lake also owned three of the six groups competing in the 4×400. A squad from Hillsboro/Central Valley placed first, but Tangedal, Lebrun, Tenley Tripke and Ella Wass came in second. The other two groups of Firebirds placed fifth and six.
The Firebirds were well-represented in the 4×800 as well. McLaurin, Tripke, Wass and Goss placed second out of five groups, while another Devils Lake group came in fourth.
Kraft won the long jump out of 21 participants with a mark of 14 feet, four inches. Chaylee Hewson came in sixth. Trinity Kus won the triple jump with a score of 28’ 9.25.
Meanwhile on the boys’ side, the Firebirds collected 56 points, which tied them for fifth with Hillsboro/Central Valley. The winner, Shanley, had 97, while last-place Richland had 13.
In the 400-meter dash, Adam Sobolik came in fourth place out of 22 runners. Saige Thumb came in 11th; other finishers from Devils Lake were Avery Eback, Landon Zinke and Isaac Vaagen.
Then in the 800 meters, the Firebirds got another second-place finish from Zane Bennett. Ty Kremer took eighth out of 10 runners.
Bennett won first place in the 1600-meter dash, while Gerardo Sanchez was seventh and Kremer was 13th. Aiden Ackerman placed 10th in the 1600 and first in the 3200 (though he was the only runner to actually compete in the 3200).
A quarter of Firebirds also competed in the 4×200 relay. Leo Franco, Grant Quam, Caber Bryce Volk and Sobolik placed third out of five teams.
In the high jump, Quam tied for second place with a 5-foot-8 leap, while Sobolik was right behind him in third place with a 5-foot-6 score. A lone Firebird competed in the triple jump, Christian Buchli, and he came in seventh place out of nine participants.
The track and field athletes will continue their season on Friday in Fargo.
