Highlights

Speaking of state tournaments, Devils Lake boys’ basketball advanced to the Division A tournament with its region championship victory on Thursday. Wylee Delorme and Mason Palmer had 22 and 20 points, respectively, in a 73-64 defeat of Thompson. For more on this game, read here.

Four Winds/Minnewaukan, meanwhile, saw its season come to an end. After losing to Devils Lake in the semifinals, the Indians had to play Grafton, which got upset by Thompson. The Spoilers won 70-62 and limited Deng Deng to 13 points in the final game of his basketball career.

Deng was presented with the Region 2 Senior Athlete of the Year award after the game. Deng and Dalen Leftbear were both named to the All-Region 2 team. Three Firebirds were selected to the team: Delorme, Parker Brodina and Joel Nelson.

Lake Region State College baseball lost both games of a doubleheader to Ridgewater College at Lake Myrtle — 22-4 in six innings and 12-2 in five innings. The Royals are 2-5.

What to watch

The only sports in North Dakota on Friday will be Division AA tournament games.

State qualifier games will be played at Scheels Center in Fargo on Saturday. Grafton plays Wahpeton (the second-place team from Region 1) at 1 p.m., and Thompson plays Valley City (the third-place team from Region 1) at 3 p.m. The winners go to state, while the losers go home. By the end of Saturday, the state tournament seeds will be solidified.

Because Devils Lake won and FW/M lost, neither team will be competing in state qualifiers. Originally, there was a solid chance that all three of Grafton, Devils Lake and FW/M would go to state, but Thompson’s defeat of Grafton guaranteed that at least one of them would be left out.

The Division A state tournament begins Thursday at the Fargodome at the same time as the Division B tournament.
