By the end of Saturday, No. 4 Devils Lake girls’ basketball will either be in the state tournament, or its season will be over.
There’s no in-between.
After losing a 70-69 thriller to No. 1 Thompson on Thursday, the Firebirds are set for a state play-in game against Kindred at Mayville State University at 3 p.m. The Vikings went 17-6 overall, 10-2 in Region 1 during the regular season. They placed third in the Region 1 tournament.
It’s go time for Devils Lake, which nearly pulled off the upset of the season but still has a strong chance of making it into the state tournament.
Highlights
No. 4 Devils Lake boys’ basketball beat Thompson 80-69 in its penultimate home game of the regular season on Friday. Wylee Delorme reached 1,000 career points in the victory. For more on this game, read here.
Devils Lake girls’ hockey won its consolation game in the state tournament, beating Legacy/Bismarck 4-3. Ashlyn Abrahamson had three goals, while Siri Olson had one. The Firebirds came out much stronger with three goals in the first period, compared to the tournament opener when they didn’t score until the third period.
No. 1 North Star boys’ basketball won its first game of the District 3 tournament, 56-30 over Drayton/Valley-Edinburg. For more on this game, read here.
No. 3 Four Winds/Minnewaukan boys’ basketball beat Hillsboro/Central Valley 75-48 in its second-to-last game of the regular season. The Indians are tied with No. 2 Grafton with the best region record at 7-2.

What to watch
Devils Lake girls’ hockey will compete for fifth place against No. 1 West Fargo at approximately 2:30 p.m. at Farmers Union Insurance Arena.
In addition to Devils Lake girl’s basketball’s play-in game at 3 p.m., there will be play-in games at Mayville State University nearly all day. Carrington, the team the Firebirds beat in their tournament opener, will face Valley City at 1 p.m. Benson County and Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich girls’ basketball each have games at 5 and 7 p.m., respectively.
