It’s a big day for two Devils Lake sports: girls’ basketball and girls’ hockey.

The basketball team plays undefeated Thompson in the Region 2 final at Mayville State University at 7 p.m. The winner secures a spot in the state tournament. The loser goes to a play-in game on Saturday.

Hockey, meanwhile, begins its state tournament at Scheels Arena in Fargo. The No. 7-seeded Firebirds will play the No. 2 seed, Fargo North/South, at 5 p.m. If they win, they advance to the semifinals. If they lose, they go to the consolation semifinals.

Devils Lake is the underdog in both sports on Thursday, and a loss wouldn’t end either of their seasons just yet. But a win would have massive implications for both squads.

Highlights

The Lake Region State College basketball teams played their last regular season home games on Wednesday and celebrated their Sophomore Night. Facing Dawson Community College, the women’s team fell just short, while the men pulled off an upset victory. Read here and here for more on the games.

What to watch

Four Winds/Minnewaukan girls’ basketball will compete for third place in the Region 2 tournament at 5:30 p.m. at Mayville State University. The Indians entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed, while their opponent, Carrington, entered as the No. 3 seed and lost to Devils Lake. If the Indians win, they’ll advance to a state play-in game.

FW/M’s game will precede Devils Lake and Thompson’s, which will begin at roughly 7 p.m.

The hockey game will be the third of four games at Scheels Arena on Thursday. Devils Lake will play again on Friday regardless of if they win or lose; who they play, and at what time, will depend on the result.

No. 3 Four Winds/Minnewaukan boys’ basketball plays its final home game of the regular season on Thursday. The Indians face Oak Grove at 6:30 p.m.
