The Region 2 girls’ basketball tournament began Monday at Mayville State University, and the higher seed took home a 20-point win in each game. Four Winds/Minnewaukan beat Grafton 53-33 in a matchup of the No. 4 and 5 seeds, while Carrington beat Hillsboro/Central Valley 59-39 in a contest between the No. 3 and 6 seeds.
So now both teams advance to the semifinals, where they’ll play the top two teams in the region: No. 1 Thompson and No. 4 Devils Lake.
FW/M and Thompson will play first at 5:30 p.m. The Tommies won all 20 games during the regular season, including two against these same Indians.
Approximately 20 minutes after that game, Devils Lake will face Carrington. The Firebirds won both their matchups against the Cardinals during the regular season: 54-46 and 52-44.
The season will not be over for the losers of Tuesday’s games. The losers will face each other in a battle for third place on Thursday before the tournament final, and the winner of the third-place game will advance to a state qualifier game.

What to watch
It’s all about the Region 2 girls tournament on Tuesday, with FW/M and Devils Lake playing at 5:30 and roughly 7 p.m., respectively.
The Firebirds are the favored team over Carrington, while the Indians will have a tough battle on their hands. A win for Devils Lake would put it in the Region 2 final against Thompson. If it loses the final, it would go to a state qualifier game, much like the winner of the third-place game.
