The Devils Lake girls’ hockey team is going to the state tournament.
With the Firebirds’ 3-2 win over Jamestown on Tuesday, they locked up a spot in the eight-seed tournament that begins on Feb. 22 at Scheels Arena in Fargo. Ashlyn Abrahamson continued her tremendous season with two more goals, while Siri Olson had a goal and two assists. Delaney Parker had 25 saves.
Devils Lake (9-12, 9-11) is currently in sixth place, which would match it up against No. 3 Mandan (17-6, 16-6) if the season were to end today.
The season doesn’t end today, but it does end this week. The Firebirds will return home for games on Friday and Saturday, then begin tournament play next Thursday.
Highlights
The girls’ hockey team provided the only positive result for Devils Lake on Tuesday, as the boys’ hockey and basketball teams both suffered tough losses on the road.
The hockey team, after advancing to the quarterfinals of the East Region Tournament with a play-in game victory, lost to No. 1 Grand Forks Red River, 5-3. Austin Thompson scored two goals, while Max Langton had one, but they couldn’t do quite enough to dethrone the top seed. Devils Lake will play a consolation game against No. 5 West Fargo on Friday at 11 a.m.
The boys’ basketball team, ranked No. 2 in Division A, saw its 13-game winning streak come to an end. It had been alive since before Christmas. The Firebirds fell in a tough matchup with No. 4 Grafton, plagued by 29 fouls. For more on this game, read here.
No. 3 Four Winds/Minnewaukan boys’ basketball scored a ridiculous 100 points in a 100-34 victory over Carrington on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see how these latest results affect next week’s polls, which have been stagnant as of late.
No. 1 North Star beat North Border 74-61 in Division B, improving to 17-1 overall and 8-0 in District 3 play. The Bearcats will wrap up their regular season on Thursday at home against May-Port-C-G.
Lake Region State College softball recently started its season. The Royals won their first game on Saturday on a walk-off single by Whitney Rozdeba, with Madison Dauphinais pitching a complete game. But they’ve since lost their last three, and none of them were close. They continue their season on Feb. 24. They won’t play any home games until March 30.
The softball program made a signing, too, adding right-handed pitcher/outfielder Kallie Mielke for next year.
