Sunday was a light day in the Lake Region with just some junior college basketball action, but Monday will bring the return of high school basketball — namely, the competitive Devils Lake boys’ team, which is on a fiery streak of success.

Highlights

The Lake Region State College basketball teams both took home tough losses to United Tribes Technical College on Sunday. Read here for more on the women’s game and here for more on the men’s game.

The Devils Lake girls’ hockey team has been playing well recently with three wins and a tie in its last four games. The team Facebook account announced that Charly Black, Olivia Erickstad and Jennica Grafsgaard are the players of the week for their defensive efforts.

A packed weekend of wrestling also came to a conclusion for the Firebirds. The boys lost to Bismarck Legacy 30-27, Mandan 42-33 and Bismarck High School 63-12. The girls, meanwhile, placed seventh out of 22 teams in the 2024 Rugby Tournament. Isabelle Berg and Jaylee Jetty each placed third in their weight class. What to watch

High school basketball picks back up on Monday. The No. 3 Devils Lake boys’ team plays on the road at 4:30 p.m. against Carrington, which just suffered a beatdown to the No. 2 team in Division B, North Star. The Firebirds are 10-1 after winning their last seven games.

The new weekly polls should be announced Monday as well. Devils Lake, with its 36-point win over No. 5 Beulah on Friday, will likely move up to the No. 2 spot. Kindred should remain at No. 1 after handing No. 2 Four Winds/Minnewaukan a heartbreaking loss, while the Indians will probably slot in at No. 3. All of this, of course, is just speculation and will need to be confirmed in the polls that typically come out Monday afternoon.

Speaking of the No. 2 North Star Bearcats, who are 11-0, they also play on the road Monday against Drayton/Valley-Edinburg at 7 p.m. The Titans are the last-place team in North Star’s district with a 1-9 record.

Benson County and Nelson County’s boys’ basketball teams have games on Monday as well. The Wildcats (4-6) play Larimore (8-4) at 7:30 p.m., while the Chargers (4-4) face New Rockford-Sheyenne (5-3) at 7:30 p.m.
