Saturday was another good day for the Devils Lake and North Star boys’ basketball teams, two of the best squads in their respective divisions. The day also saw some hockey action. The Lake Region State College Royals, meanwhile, will return to action on Sunday.
Highlights
The Class A Boys Shootout continued with No. 3 Devils Lake and No. 2 Four Winds/Minnewaukan each playing a ranked opponent. The Firebirds handled No. 5 Beulah 84-48, while the Indians lost a defensive thriller to No. 1 Kindred 48-45.
North Star boys’ basketball, the No. 2 team in Division B, won a blowout over Carrington, 66-28. Carrington is a Division A team, but has struggled to the tune of a 1-9 record this year. The Bearcats are 11-0 on the season now. The result shows that a strong Division B team is likely still better than a weak Division A team, despite being in a theoretically worse division.
Devils Lake girls’ hockey won on the road, a 6-2 defeat of Williston. Ashlyn Abrahamson scored a whopping four goals. She leads the team with 28 on the season. Siri Olson scored the other two, one of which came from an Abrahamson assist. Olson is second on the team with eight goals. Goalie Delaney Parker had 35 saves for Devils Lake. The Firebirds are 6-8 overall, though 6-5 with Parker in front of the net.
Lake Region State College women’s hockey lost 5-1 on the road against Jamestown. The Royals are 4-9 on the season.
