Thursday was a day of exciting upsets for Devils Lake boys’ basketball and girls’ hockey, while Friday will bring the girls’ basketball team to the spotlight.

Highlights

No. 4 Devils Lake boys’ basketball pulled off a thrilling win against No. 1 Grafton. Wylee Delorme had 27 points, while Parker Brodina had 21, which included the game winner. Read the story of a wild night in Devils Lake here.

Devils Lake girls’ hockey also achieved an upset victory at home over first-place West Fargo United. The Firebirds won 2-1, getting goals from Siri Olson and Ashlyn Abrahamson. Goalie Delaney Parker had 30 saves. The team improved to 4-8, while West Fargo United stayed narrowly in first place with an 11-3-2 record.

Devils Lake boys’ hockey also won on Thursday, beating Grafton 5-2 on the road. The Firebirds improved to 6-7-1.

Four Winds/Minnewaukan boys’ basketball took home a dominant win, beating Carrington 87-41. Devils Lake, Grafton and FW/M all now have a 2-1 record in Division A, Region 2. In the latest polls, they were ranked No. 4, 1 and 3, respectively. It’s yet to be seen how much Thursday’s results will impact the next ranking. Devils Lake’s lone loss this season came to FW/M on Dec. 21.

Benson County girls’ basketball won 73-64 at Hatton/Northwood. The Wildcats sit in first place in Division B, Region 2, District 4 with a 2-0 district record thus far. They are 8-4 overall.

The North Star girls lost at Langdon Area/Edmore/Munich, 62-35.

What to watch

The Devils Lake girls’ basketball team will begin tournament play on Friday at Devils Lake Sports Center. The Firebirds’ first opponent is Shiloh Christian at 1:30 p.m. Devils Lake was ranked No. 5 in the most recent polls. Then at 6 p.m. in Devils Lake, Four Winds/Minnewaukan will take on Beulah.

In Devils Lake’s boys’ region, Thompson will be taking on Hillsboro/Central Valley at Thompson High School at 7:30 p.m.

North Star boys’ basketball, ranked No. 2 in Division B, has its first district matchup of the season at 7 p.m. against Carrington. The Bearcats are undefeated so far.

Warwick will also be playing on Friday at home against May-Port-C-G at 7 p.m.

On the hockey side, the Lake Region State College men’s team is playing on the road Friday at 6 p.m. against Minnesota State University Moorhead.
