The first period was a defensive matchup. Neither team could get past the other’s defense, but the West Fargo Packers smacked twelve shots off Devils Lake Firebirds goalie Reegan Reule. The teams skated to a tie in the first, but the preview to the real action started when, with twenty-two seconds left, Firebirds Carter Schwab and Packers Tristan Blaze were ejected from the game for fighting.
It was a hockey game.
Bodies bounced off the boards the next two periods, and the game got a bit chippy. Camden “Crusher” Schwab did not engender himself to any of the Packers because he rocked the boards and glass with them on some good, solid hits. The Packers did their best to return the hurt.
The Packers put their first score on the board playing shorthanded at 15:22 in the second period. Nathan Tangen poked the puck free from Reule in the crease. Tangen wound up with a hat trick on the night. From then on the Firebirds seemed to slow down, content to play from the Packers’ blue line and move the puck around. They passed up a lot of shots. They only put four shots on goal the whole period. Tanner Nelson scored the second Packers goal with six minutes left in the period, and Tangen scored his second with fifty-six seconds left. Reule deflected a slap shot from the wing, and Tangen was in the right spot to lift the puck over Reule’s glove.
The Firebirds came into the third very aggressively, pushing the puck onto the Packers ice and taking shots. Unfortunately it didn’t last. The Packers got the puck past the Firebirds defenders and worked it into the crease where Devin Wolf poked it past Reule for the fourth goal with just under four minutes gone in the third.
Just over two minutes later Cody Dow threaded a slap shot from the blue line through traffic and rang the inside of the post for goal number five.
The Firebirds had a great opportunity at the eight minute mark when Brayden Jacobson was called for major and misconduct, and a minute later was joined by Chase Forthun on a hooking call. The Firebirds had a five on three powerplay but couldn’t, wouldn’t take the shots.
Tangen picked up his third goal on the night with two and a half minutes left in the game.
The Packers two thirty-five shots on goal to the Firebirds seventeen. The Packers also picked up forty minutes of penalties to the Firebirds twenty-three.
