The Firebirds girls hockey team crushed their opponents this past weekend.  Friday, the Firebirds beat the Minot Majettes 4-2, and on Saturday they shutout the Williston Coyotes 10-0.

The Firebirds controlled the ice Friday night.  The two goals the Majettes scored were on power plays, the second coming at the end of five minute major penalty, and the Firebirds controlled the ice for nearly all of that five minutes.

The scoring was led by a one-on-two break-away by Kylie Klemetsrud at 10:18 in the first period.  She stick-checked the puck from a Majette forward and took it all the way to the goal, splitting the two Majette defenders.

The Majettes tied the game with just under four minutes left in the first with ten seconds left on a power play.  Majettes Averi Bradley got the puck past Molly Black on a pass from Kaya Shaw.

The Firebirds took full advantage of two power plays in the second period and scored two of their three goals.  Elle Black put the puck in the Majettes’ net against a full strength Majettes team.  Four minutes later she did it again on a Firebirds power play, with assists from Abbey Reule and Kaylie Klemetsrud.  At the five minute mark and thirty seconds left on another power play, Abbey Reule, with assists from Kaylie Klemetsrud and Vivianna Kraft, made it a four to one game.

The Majettes got their second goal of the game on a five minute major penalty power play.  It looked like the Firebirds defense was going to hold, but Carson Abrahamson shot and the block by Molly Black bounced right back at her.  Abrahamson found the hole with forty-seven seconds left in the power play.

The Firebird offense did spectacular job of keeping the puck on the Majettes side of the ice for most of the fifty-one minutes of play.  Molly Black, as usual, was a defensive wall in the crease.  The Firebirds won 4-2.

Both Black and Majette goalie Amber Borkhuis had thirty-four saves on the night, but the Firebirds had more shots on goal.

Saturday’s game against the Williston Coyotes was a rout for the Firebirds.  Klemetsrud had a five-goal night—one shy of a double hat trick. Haylee Carlson, Elle Black (she scored twice), Keiarra Durbin, an Abbey Reule also found the back of the Coyote net.

The Coyotes only had nine shots on goal all night.  The Firebirds had thirty-eight.

The Firebirds are now fifth in the standings at 2-2.  The Minot Majettes are 1-3 (tied with the Mandan Braves for ninth), and Williston is 0-3.
