For the second straight year, Devils Lake volleyball has beaten Thompson in a region match.
The Firebirds remained undefeated, improving to 4-0 overall in their region opener Thursday against the Tommies. They won 3-1 behind 32 combined kills between Emma Hofstad and Kinley Johnson, along with 28 assists by Riley Remmick and 26 digs by Elin Skaar.
Devils Lake trailed 20-17 and 23-20 in the final set. The Firebirds won the final five points to squeak out the fourth-set victory. A dump-shot by Remmick won it.
Both victories against Thompson over the last two years happened on Thompson’s home floor.
Thompson head coach Lisa Strand was interviewed by Your Live Event after the match.
“Their hitters were just on target, and they had some luck on their side as well,” Strand said of the Firebirds. “But their defense was phenomenal. They were picking up off the floor, getting balls and hitting them back over, and relentlessly playing defense.”
No. 5-ranked Devils Lake is now 1-0 in region play, with several key matches still to come.
