Some of the latest happenings related to Lake Region sports:
Devils Lake native Zach Boren commits to UNLV hockey
After three seasons in the North American Hockey League (NAHL), Boren will be continuing his hockey career at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His previous team, the Watertown Shamrocks, announced the news in a press release on June 8.
“Zach has been a consistent producer and leader for us each of the past two seasons,” Shamrocks head coach and general manager Casey Kirley said in the release. “He came to Watertown as a veteran player and used his past junior experience to be a great leader for our group. He has worked tirelessly to grow his game, as evidenced by his offensive output this past season. We wish Zach all the best as he continues his career at UNLV.”
Though Boren grew up in Devils Lake, he only played one season for the Firebirds. He appeared in 22 games as an eighth-grader during the 2018-19 season, tallying six goals and 12 assists.
After that, Boren moved to Fargo and played his remaining four years of high school hockey for Fargo South/Shanley. He collected 93 points over his final two years with the Bruins, culminating in a state championship in 2023.
Boren played one season for the New Mexico Wolves and two for the Watertown Shamrocks. This past season with the Shamrocks, he had 57 points and was a captain of the team.
UNLV is considered one of the top programs in ACHA Division I. The Rebels won a national championship in 2025.
“I chose UNLV because of how they treat their players,” Boren said in the release. “To me, they have a Division 1 feel and the possibility of going Division 1 in the future, which was big for me. I’m excited for the overall experience that they offer with the culture they have there, and the nice weather is obviously a nice bonus.”
Tyler Cree-Beglau commits to Northern State track
Cree-Beglau, a Dakota Prairie High School senior, announced on June 8 that he has committed to Northern State University, where he will continue his track and field career.
Cree-Beglau competed in four events at the state track meet for Nelson County this season, including the triple jump, which he won with a personal-best 45’11.75’’. He also came in 15th in the 400-meter dash, 20th in long jump and 23rd in the 800-meter dash.
Cree-Beglau was also a starter on the Nelson County basketball team that made it to state this winter.
NSU is an NCAA Division II program that competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
LRSC baseball coach Steve Anderson resigns
After two seasons at the helm for Lake Region State College, Anderson has resigned from his position, the college confirmed recently.
In 2025, Anderson’s first season with the Royals, LRSC set a program record for conference wins with an 11-13 record. The Royals took a step back this year, going 5-14 in Mon-Dak play.
Anderson is originally from Eau Claire, Wis. He’s currently coaching a summer ball team in the Dairyland Collegiate League.
LRSC will now be on the hunt for its next baseball coach. Its last two baseball coaches have combined to stay at the school for three seasons.
Suri Gourd receives second offer
The offers are coming in quickly now for the incoming Four Winds junior.
Just over a week after receiving her first offer from the University of Mary, Gourd announced on June 9 that she has received an offer from Black Hills State University. She got the offer during a phone call with BHSU head coach Kelly Kruger, following an AAU tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D.
BHSU is an NCAA Division II program in Spearfish, S.D. It competes in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and went 18-11 overall last year with a 14-6 conference record.
Gourd, who received an offer from Mary after an official visit on June 1, has two more visits planned in the near future.
