DEVILS LAKE — The Devils Lake Storm B 18U faced off against Midway Minto Post 201 in American Legion action Monday evening, June 8, at DLYA Field. After both teams kept the score tight for the first six innings, Midway Minto pulled ahead with 12 runs at the top of the seventh to win the game 15-4.
Midway Minto started the game with two runs in the top of the first, with the Storm answering back with one. After a scoreless second inning, Devils Lake’s Andrew Hammond singled on a ground ball to third, batting in a run to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. A fly out to right field by Marek Osowski put Midway Minto the lead, 3-2, in the top of the fourth. The Storm tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Midway Minto pulled ahead with a massive lead, scoring 12 runs on seven hits to create a 15-3 score. The biggest blow was a triple and an error that drove in four runs. Devils Lake answered back with only one more run, ending the game at 15-4.
Marek Osowski started on the mound for Midway Minto, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) in over five innings. Ezra Robinson took his place afterwards, allowing two hits and one run that was earned. Devils Lake’s Talan Gregory threw for three innings, allowing two hits and two runs, striking out two and walking four. Riley Brenno-Quale took the loss, giving up nine runs (one earned) on eight hits, striking out two and walking four. Midway Minto accumulated 13 hits and one error, while Devils Lake secured six hits and six errors.
When asked about the loss, Devils Lake head coach Parker Schmid said, “That’s baseball, you know. They hit it and we didn’t and they just hit it where we weren’t, and we couldn’t figure out how to do that. Live and you learn.”
The Devils Lake Storm B will have their next action against the Williston Oilers 17U on Wednesday, June 10, at DLYA Field.
