Devils Lake came home from the region track and field meet with two event championships.
Sara Kraft won the long jump and a quartet of Firebird girls won the 4×800 relay. Overall, the Devils Lake girls took ninth place out of 11 teams with 39 points at the Eastern Dakota Conference meet at Shanley High School on Friday.
The Devils Lake boys took 10th place out of 11 teams with 13 points.
Kraft recorded a jump of 17’11.25’’ to take first out of 35 official placers in the long jump. It was her seventh time competing in long jump this year. She came in first or second place every single time. She qualified for state all the way back on April 14, which was the first outdoor meet of the season.
The group of Scarlett Leiphon, Aubrie Lebrun, Riley Schmiess and Brooklyn Johnson took first in the 4×800. They ran a 10:12.72, beating eight other quartets. The next-best team was more than three seconds slower.
The relay team was anchored by a senior in Lebrun. The rest of the group is young: Schmiess is a freshman, Johnson is an eighth-grader and Leiphon is a seventh-grader.
Devils Lake sophomore Ella Wass also had a strong showing. She came in third out of 32 contestants in the 300-meter hurdles. Her 46.10 time was a school record in the event, beating the 46.18 set by Esther Iverson in 1984. Wass had already qualified for state in the 300 on April 21.
Kraft added a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (16.02) and ninth in the 300-meter hurdles (49.32).
The girls had two individual eighth-place finishes: Johnson in the 1600-meter run (5:32.32) and April Miller in the triple jump (33’1’’).
Two additional Devils Lake girls relay teams placed in the top eight. Siri Bryce Volk, Raeleigh Myklebust, Wass and Kraft placed fifth in the 4×200 with a 1:48.52. Lebrun, Aubryn Wiberg, Tenley Triepke and Wass placed eighth in the 4×400 with a 4:28.41.
