Lake Region sports roundup: May 5-7

Tuesday and Wednesday were sparse for sports, outside of a couple diamond sports games and a golf meet, but Thursday was full of baseball, softball and track in the Lake Region.

Athlete spotlight: Sara Kraft, Devils Lake track and field

Another week, and another school record for Kraft.

In the Fargo Rotary Invite on Thursday, Kraft posted a time of 15.43 in the 100-meter hurdles. It narrowly broke the school record of 15.44 set by Esther Iverson in 1985.

Early this season, she set a school record in the 100-meter dash.

Kraft, a junior, has already qualified for state in the 100-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, 300-meter hurdles, 4×100 relay, 4×200 relay, 4×400 relay, long jump and triple jump this season.

She added a first-place finish in long jump on Thursday, helping the Devils Lake girls come in third place out of eight teams — the others of whom were from the Fargo and Grand Forks areas.

Game spotlight: Thomas Allmaras smacks walk-off homer

New Rockford-Sheyenne improved to 4-3 in region play behind a walk-off home run from Thomas Allmaras on Wednesday.

Allmaras’s solo shot capped a 3-2 win over South Border.

NR-S trailed 2-0 in the first inning after a pair of unearned runs. But Skye Kramlich dominated the rest of the way, striking out 12 and walking just one in a complete-game effort. He threw 114 pitches (76 strikes). He allowed zero earned runs.

The Rockets tied it with a pair of two-out runs in the fourth inning. Jax Demester hit an RBI single, and another run scored on a passed ball to make it 2-2.

The teams traded zeroes until Allmaras’s walk-off blast with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Allmaras, the leadoff hitter, had been 0-for-3 before his bomb, which came on a 1-1 count.

It was his third home run of the season.

NR-S went on to split a pair of region games on Thursday.
