Lake Region sports roundup: April 24-27

in

The chilly, windy weather wiped out most sports on Monday, but the North Star and Langdon Area/Munich baseball teams toughed it out.

On Friday and Saturday, the Devils Lake baseball and softball teams picked up some crucial wins in Eastern Dakota Conference play.

The latest from Lake Region sports:

Athlete spotlight: Cayden McCarthy, Devils Lake baseball

McCarthy is an X-factor for the Firebirds this year. After graduating some key senior pitchers, Devils Lake is looking for him to take a bigger role.

McCarthy’s first start of the season had gone well for three innings before it spiraled in the fourth. McCarthy had a notably strong bounce-back performance Friday, allowing just one run in six innings against the Fargo South Bruins, who entered the day in second place in the EDC. Devils Lake won, 2-1.

McCarthy isn’t new to varsity, having gotten some innings with the squad since his freshman year. But he’s been waiting his turn for a major role, and now he has it as a junior. McCarthy has a live fastball and a solid curveball that he uses to get hitters out. He’s showed his potential plenty of times in the past, but now he just guided Devils Lake to an eventual sweep of the preseason No. 2 in the EDC.

That’s a game changer for the Firebirds, who now sit in the top half of the EDC standings.

Game spotlight: Devils Lake softball grabs first EDC win

The other diamond sports team in town took a win Saturday. Devils Lake softball blew out Fargo South 22-2, grabbing its first EDC win after two conference losses to begin the season.

The Firebirds were led by senior Julia McIvor, who had a big day on both sides of the ball. At the plate, she went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double, a walk and five RBIs. In the circle, she started and pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings. She limited the Bruins to two hits, collecting five strikeouts along the way.

Sophomore Hannah Garza also had a 4-for-4 day with a home run. The Firebirds totaled 23 hits in their offensive explosion — much-needed after struggling to get the bats going against Shanley in their home opener.

Ava Beck added a 3-for-5 performance, while Riley Remmick, Taylor Leben, Madison Hettwer and Sariyah Ponder each recorded multiple hits. Gabby Bundy pitched the final 1 2/3 innings of the run-rule victory.

Devils Lake moved into seventh place out of 10 teams in the EDC with a 2-4 conference record after the win.
