Lake Region sports roundup: April 17-20

in

Weather mostly wiped out sports over the weekend, but Monday was a busy day in the Lake Region sports scene.

North Star baseball finally got its season going, splitting a pair of region games. The Nelson County/Midkota baseball team got its first win of the season, and Theo Romfo smashed another homer for Langdon Area/Munich.

LA/M also had two qualifying relay times in track and field on Monday, along with Levi Swanson qualifying in javelin.

Lake Region State College moved all of its games to Montana. The Royals continued to struggle in the win column, but Devils Lake alum Trason Beck had a nice series.

Athlete spotlight: Theo Romfo, Langdon Area/Munich baseball

For the second time already this season, Romfo once again stands out. LA/M played its second seven-inning game of the season on Monday — and Romfo has homered in both of them.

This comes after he hit eight home runs as a junior.

Romfo went 3-for-5, leading the Cardinals to a 12-2 run-rule win in their region opener against Grafton. In LA/M’s two seven-inning games, Romfo has gone 7-for-10 with two homers. He’s off to an absolutely blistering start.

Romfo and the Cardinals have a busy weekend coming up, with three games between Friday and Saturday, before playing a strong Class B team in Park River Area on Monday. In the teams’ most recent meeting last year, LA/M lost 3-1. The lone run, of course, came from a Romfo homer.

Game spotlight: Nelson County/Midkota baseball secures first win of season

NC/M had been off to kind of a tough 0-4 start. The Chargers battled with Park River Area and Midway/Minto but had no wins to show for it.

They got over the hump on Monday.

Not only did they get a win, but it was a commanding, well-rounded victory. It was a 10-0 run-rule win over Maple River. Caleb Rainsberry, who’s just a freshman, pitched six scoreless innings with only two hits allowed. He struck out six. He also went 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot.

Landon Sundeen also had a multi-hit game. He, Rainsberry and Lakin Ronningen each recorded a double. Brody Rainsberry also contributed with a walk, two RBIs and three stolen bases. Even the nine-hole hitter was productive, as Westin Wright went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

NC/M scored in every inning except the third.

It was a region win for the Chargers, improving their region record to 1-2.
