Lake Region sports roundup: April 10-13

Outdoor spring sports are slowly but surely starting to get underway. Thus, sports roundups are back for the spring season.

While neither the Devils Lake baseball or softball team has played a game yet, some of the area teams have gotten their seasons going.

The New Rockford-Sheyenne baseball team is off to a 2-0 start after a pair of five-inning shutouts. The Nelson County/Midkota softball team is also 2-0, most recently winning a wild 17-16 affair.

NC/M baseball fought with Park River Area, one of the better Class B baseball programs in the state, but Monday’s game got away from the Chargers in the late innings as they fell to 0-3.

Athlete spotlight: Theo Romfo, Langdon Area/Munich baseball

The senior Romfo is no stranger to success on the diamond. He was an all-state first team selection last spring, batting a blistering .517 with eight home runs. That kind of power is rare in North Dakota high school baseball. He’s pretty good on the mound, too.

Romfo wasted no time getting off to another good start this season. In Langdon Area/Munich’s season-opening win on April 10, Romfo went 4-for-5 with a homer. He also contributed three hitless innings on the mound, striking out six.

Romfo is a key player to watch this season in Class B baseball.

Game spotlight: Nelson County/Midkota wins a topsy-turvy 17-16 roller coaster in softball

Coming off a successful 10-5 season, the Chargers starting this campaign 2-0 is no huge surpirse.

But they probably didn’t draw it up quite like that.

Playing at home in McVille, NC/M won 17-16 over Northern Cass on Monday. The Chargers had a deficit as wide as 15-6 after giving up six in the fourth and two in the fifth. They made six errors, resulting in just nine earned runs out of the 16 they allowed.

But they inched closer with an eight-run fifth and took the lead with a three-run sixth. The NC/M offense collected 13 hits and 10 walks. Down 16-14, Kelsey Johnson hit a bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the sixth to complete the comeback.

Pitcher Mya Luehring stuck it out for all seven innings, throwing a whopping 163 pitches (90 strikes). She struck out six, including the last two of the game.

Luehring and Kenley Blasey both had three-hit performances.
