DEVILS LAKE — About an hour before practice time, the Devils Lake baseball team learned that it had been cleared to play in the outfield.
The Firebirds were already planning to take the infield for the first time in 2026.
So, for the first time this season, Devils Lake held a baseball practice at DLYA Field on Friday. Originally scheduled to play games Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the team had to cancel or postpone all of this week’s action due to cold weather and poor field conditions.
Pushing 50 degrees, it was one of the warmest days in Devils Lake since last fall. Head coach Brent Luehring expressed how happy he was to get outside and to get the kids moving around a little.
It was a joint practice between varsity and junior varsity, aided by assistant coaches Brandon Elfman and Parker Schmid. Before they got going, they had to attach bases to the turf.
The coaches hit grounders, double-play balls and slow rollers to the infielders, while the outfielders did their own thing in the grass. Later, the team ran double-cut drills in all three outfield spots and then transitioned into a routine infield/outfield (I/O) session.
Under a shining sun and above-freezing temperatures, the Firebirds finally played some outdoor baseball — albeit not in an official game just yet.
Weather permitting, Devils Lake is set to finally begin its season on Tuesday, April 14 against West Fargo at Young Field. Temperatures are supposed to get into high 60s, but there is rain in the forecast, as of Friday.
