Devils Lake wrapped up its indoor track and field season on Friday in the Dick Clay Invite at Fritz Pollard Athletic Center in Grand Forks.

The Firebirds continued to shine, especially on the girls’ side. Sara Kraft and Scarlett Leiphon both set indoor school records.

Langdon Area/Munich and New Rockford-Sheyenne also competed in the meet, which had 35 teams listed.

Boys

Team results

Devils Lake scored 18.5 points, coming in 12th out of the 27 teams that placed.

LA/M was 13th with 18 points.

NR-S was in a six-way tie for 19th with four points.

Moorhead and Brainerd — both from Minnesota — took first and second with 152 and 129 points, respectively.

Devils Lake highlights

Zane Bennett ran season bests in the mile (4:39.75) and 3200-meter run (10:31.09). He placed third and fourth, respectively.

Finley Wirth came in seventh in the 200-meter dash (23.69) and ninth in the 60-meter (7.36).

Tucker Bennett was seventh in the pole vault with a mark of 10’0’’. Isaac Kraft placed eighth in the 800-meter, running a personal-best 2:11.53.

Class B area teams’ highlights

LA/M sophomore Caleb McDonald won the high jump with a personal-best 6’4’’.

TJ Henderson placed second in the long jump with a personal-best 20’1.25’’. McDonald added a 10th-place finish in the long jump.

LA/M also had three runners in the top 25 of the 400-meter, led by McDonald in 14th place.

Koy Zieman led NR-S in the 200-meter (ninth place, personal-best 23.89) and 60-meter (26th place, personal-best 7.58). Easton Benz and Sawyer Huso were the next-best Rockets in each of those events.

Two of the top 35 in the shot put — which had 157 placers — were from the NR-S co-op. Four Winds’ Francis Bellile was 32nd (36’11.75’’) while Chaztin Wobbema was 35th (36’9.75’’).

Girls

Team results

Devils Lake placed third out of 26 teams with 63 points.

LA/M was in a three-way tie for 11th with 20 points.

NR-S came in a tie for 18th with nine points.

Moorhead and Brainerd took first and second with 94 and 77 points, respectively.

Devils Lake highlights

Kraft took first place in the triple jump. Her mark of 35’1.5’’ was an indoor school record, surpassing Beth Naomi Alexander’s 34’11’’. It was the second indoor school record Kraft has broken this year.

Kraft also won the long jump (17’4’’). In the 60-meter hurdles, she placed second in the prelims (9.93) before taking fifth in the finals (10.19).

Leiphon, who’s just a seventh-grader, set an indoor school record of 1:50.05 in the 600-meter. She took 11th place overall.

The previous record was held by Dottie Goss at 1:50.38. Goss is currently out with an injury she sustained during basketball season.

Leiphon has also done well in the 3200-meter run this year, placing first at the Cobber Indoor and setting a personal best at the Mike Grandall Invite.

Sophomore Ella Wass placed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 50.13.

Class B area teams’ highlights

LA/M freshman Fenja Lawson placed third in the shot put with a personal-best 34’8.5’’.

Eighth-grader Hallie Overby came in ninth in the 400 with a personal-best 1:04.15.

Meggy Hetletved finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.98) and sixth in the 300-meter hurdles (50.95)

Taya Feist added a sixth-place finish in the high jump (4’10’’) for the Cardinals.

For the Rockets, Jaida Schumacher had a strong showing, placing fifth in the 400 (personal-best 1:01.41) and 14th in the 60-meter (8.34).

Seventh-grader Sadie Knatterud came in 12th in a crowded 200-meter field. She ran a personal-best 28.03.

The relay quartet of Schumacher, Ava Peterson, Kensley Engels and Knatterud came in sixth out of 37 teams in the 4×200.

Up next

Devils Lake’s outdoor season is scheduled to begin Friday, April 10 in the Sheyenne Invitational at Sheyenne High School.
