The Devils Lake boys’ and girls’ track and field teams both took first overall in the Braves Invite on Tuesday at Turtle Mountain Community High School.
Langdon Area/Munich competed in the meet as well. The Cardinals took second on the girls’ side and fourth on the boys’ side.
Boys
Team results
Of the 10 events, two were recorded separately from the other eight on athletic.net.
Devils Lake took first out of seven teams in the initial eight events. The Firebirds scored 154.5 points, a wide gap ahead of second-place Max-South Prairie, which had 59.
Three teams placed in the other two events. Devils Lake led the trio with 38 points, while Rolette/Wolford and M-SP had 16 and 14, respectively.
Devils Lake was first overall with 192.5 points.
LA/M was fourth out of seven teams in the eight events, scoring 21.5 points. The Cardinals did not place in the other two events.
Event champions
Devils Lake junior Finley Wirth continued his early-season surge by winning the 60-meter dash. He ran a personal-best 6.82 after his first two times of the season had been in the 7.00s.
Zane Bennett won the 800 and 1600.
Isaac Kraft was first in the 400, despite his 58.52 not even being a season or personal best.
Avery Eback won the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best 10.66.
Jeff Sommer won the shot put with a mark of 40’5’’.
The Firebirds also had two relay teams finish first: Caber Bryce Volk, Draike Haugland, Max Volk and Wirth in the 4×200, then Tucker Bennett, Bryce Volk, Kraft and Ty Kremer in the 4×400.
Other highlights
Bryce Volk, Egan Laite and Brayden Berg all joined Wirth in the top 10 of the 60-meter dash. Numerous others set personal bests.
Wirth also took third in the 200. M. Volk placed second in the 200, running a personal-best 23.64.
Laite and Dexter Hannesson also came in the top 10 of the 200.
Chris Eckes, Eback and Kremer were fifth, eighth and ninth, respectively, in the 400.
Aiden Ackerman placed second in the 800 and fourth in the 1600.
Five of the top six shot put marks were from Firebirds. Nos. 2-4 were Mason Haugen, Brayden Schneider and Carter Christensen, while Grayson Asleson came in sixth.
LA/M’s Braxton Lindseth placed second in the 400 with a personal-best 59.55.
Girls
Team results
The girls’ results were split between a group of seven events and another group of three. There were seven placers in each.
In the group of seven, Devils Lake placed second with 57 points, behind LA/M’s 75. In the other three events, the Firebirds scored 43 points to place first, while LA/M only placed fourth with 11 points. So Devils Lake still took first overall with 100 total points.
LA/M was second with 86.
Event champions
Devils Lake freshman Riley Schmiess won the 1600-meter run with a season-best 5:53.21.
The Firebirds also took first in the 4×200 relay. Siri Bryce Volk, Raeleigh Myklebust, Emily Kraft and Ealynn Yoder ran a 1:55.65.
For LA/M, Mya Swanson was first in the 800 at 2:42.93. Christine Joyner won the shot put with a mark of 34’5’’.
Other highlights
Devils Lake eighth-grader Brooklyn Johnson was second behind Schmiess in the 1600. She clocked in at 5:54.25.
Myklebust took third in the 60-meter and fifth in the 200-meter.
Bryce Volk, Mallie McCloud, Aubryn Wiberg and Gabby Hunter all added top-10 finishes in the 60 and 200.
Devils Lake had relay teams place second and third in the 4×400.
LA/M’s Taya Feist placed second in the 200-meter dash and high jump. She also placed third in the 400.
Fenja Lawson was barely behind Joyner’s event-topping mark in the shot put, coming in second with a 34’3’’.
The quartet of Meggy Hetletved, Ella Goodman, Erika Bakke and Feist placed second in the 4×200 relay with a time of 1:59.88.
Up next
The Firebirds have one event left in their indoor season. It will be the Dick Clay Invite on Friday, March 27 at the Fritz Pollard Athletic Center in Grand Forks.
LA/M, New Rockford-Sheyenne and Benson County are among the many other teams scheduled to compete in the meet.
