North Star came out on top in the latest matchup between the Bearcats and Chargers.
Both teams finished in the top six at the Division B boys’ basketball state tournament.
No. 7 seed North Star (22-7) won 64-48 over No. 8 seed Nelson County (19-9) in the state fifth-place game at the Minot State Dome on Saturday.
The Bearcats won three of their four matchups with Nelson County this season. The Chargers were victorious when the teams met in the first round of the district tournament.
Kade Mitchell led North Star with 27 points in the win. The Bearcats trailed 17-16 after the first quarter but outscored Nelson County 22-8 in the second.
Ian Westlind added 16 points for North Star.
Seniors Levi Borstad and Hunter Hagler had seven and six rebounds, respectively.
The Chargers had one more rebound than North Star as a team, 34-33. They were led by Rider Schmidt, who collected a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds. Jaxson Joramo scored 12, while Brody Rainsberry had 11.
North Star shot 23-for-56 from the field, while Nelson County was 18-for-47.
The Bearcats finished fifth at state after taking second two years ago.
Nelson County finished sixth in the co-op’s first ever trip to the state tournament. It was the first state appearance for Lakota since 1976 and first for Dakota Prairie since 2009. Both teams represented District 4. Three total teams from Region 2 were represented, with Midway/Minto taking seventh.
