Colden Hutton is now the athletic director for Lake Region State College. He will vacate his women’s basketball head coach position, the college announced in a press release Thursday.
Jared Marshall is transitioning to a new role with the college’s foundation, LRSC announced, while continuing to serve as head men’s basketball coach.
The college wrote that it is “advancing its initiatives to fundraise for and construct a dedicated athletic facility.” LRSC president Carsen Simone said, per the release, that Marshall has contributed to the planning and fundraising for the facility.
“This new role allows Jared to assist in fundraising for the new athletic facility,” Simone said. “His history with the college and past fundraising with LRSC athletics make him a great addition to the foundation team.”
Marshall had been the athletic director since 2022, following Danny Mertens’ departure. Marshall has been the LRSC men’s basketball coach for 11 seasons.
“Serving as the athletic director for LRSC has been one of the greatest honors of my career,” Marshall said. “I am incredibly proud of what our student-athletes and coaches have achieved together.”
The release said that Marshall is “excited to be in a fundraising role for LRSC.”
“My passion is on the sidelines as head coach and building resources for LRSC athletics,” he said.
Hutton, meanwhile, spent the last two seasons as head coach of the Royals’ women’s basketball team. His second season — a 17-12 campaign — ended with a playoff loss to North Dakota State College of Science on Wednesday. The hiring news was released on Thursday.
Hutton went 32-19 over his two seasons coaching the Royals.
“I am excited to transition into the role of athletic director at LRSC,” Hutton said. “Helping our student-athletes and coaches be successful in the classroom, on the court/field/ice and in the community is something I am thrilled to lead.”
Unlike Marshall, who served as a head coach and athletic director for approximately four years, Hutton won’t be doing both.
The college said it will immediately begin a search for a new head women’s basketball coach.
“This structure will help move our athletic programs forward while also supporting the momentum behind the new athletic facility project,” said Erin Wood, Vice President for Advancement and Executive Director for the Community College Foundation.
