Devils Lake boys’ hockey saw its season come to an end Friday.
The No. 7-seeded Firebirds (10-14) lost 2-0 to No. 6 seed Fargo North (12-11) in the first EDC consolation round at Purpur Arena.
Devils Lake outshot the Spartans, 30-21. Fargo North goalie Dominic Crocker saved 100% of the shots against him.
The game was scoreless through the first two periods. Devils Lake had three power plays in the second period but didn’t score on any of them. The Spartans also had a power play towards the end of the period and didn’t score.
Devils Lake went 0-for-4 on power plays overall, while Fargo North went 0-for-3.
The game’s first goal came at 14:28 in the third period. It had been under three minutes away from going to overtime. Holden Erbele scored unassisted on even strength.
The Spartans added an empty-net goal at 16:16.
Devils Lake senior goalie Matt Graue saved 19 out of 20 shots (95%).
After a 7-2 start to the season, the Firebirds ended up losing 12 of their last 15 games. They fell to seventh place in the regular-season EDC standings, then beat May-Port Area in a play-in game before going two-and-out in the region tournament.
With the Devils Lake girls playing their last game on Thursday, hockey season is officially over in Devils Lake for the winter.
