Lake Region State College is canceling the remainder of the 2025-26 women’s hockey season.
The college announced the news in a press release Tuesday.
The decision, according to LRSC athletic director Jared Marshall, was due to a shortage of players.
Head coach Sawyer Diseth and the college recently parted ways, as discussed in a Journal article on Dec. 16, 2025. Presumably, enough players have transferred since then that there is no longer enough to put a team on the ice. The roster originally had 16 players on it.
“Being this short of players makes it hard to field a team without being detrimental to the student athletes,” Marshall said, per the release. “We are doing what is best for the athletes and the program.”
The Royals were 5-8 this year. They had nine games remaining on their schedule before the cancellation.
The men’s and women’s hockey programs are in their third season of existence. The women’s team has compiled a 20-34 record in that time.
The college expressed its intent to continue offering women’s hockey next season.
“Our hockey program has been a great addition to student activities,” LRSC president Dr. Carmen Simone said, per the release. “This isn’t an optimum outcome, but a necessary one.”
Following Diseth’s departure, head men’s hockey coach Brady Stein had been the interim women’s coach. The college noted that Stein is still recruiting players for next season and working with the returning athletes.
LRSC added that it’s been in contact with the American Collegiate Hockey Association, and to direct any questions to Marshall ([email protected]) or LRSC spokesperson Erin Wood ([email protected]).
