Dear Editor,
What have we done? It’s something like this:
We kept our priest, who has molested altar boys, because he makes us feel good with his stories and jokes during worship.
We asked our pastor to continue to serve us, though he slept with the organist, a confirmation student and the president’s wife, because we like his bedside manner in the hospital and his warmth when visiting the home-bound.
We embraced our clergyman, who will not take “no” for an answer, who blames the church council for anything that doesn’t work out, and yells at the acolytes, because he speaks against our rival churches and fills up the sanctuary every Sunday.
We praised the parson, who always sides with husbands over wives, cheers for SDSU, makes fun of NDSU fans, and moves the pulpit, lectern and altar out of the chancel, because he honored our country by lining it with United States flags.
That’s kind of what we’ve done. Remarkably, so many of us feel good about it.
