A couple of my friends and I went to the movies on Saturday afternoon/evening. I have promised myself that I will take a break from my “normal” weekend work and support our new and vastly improved movie theater, Encore 301, now that it’s open.

The movie we settled on for this weekend was “Killers of the Flower Moon” and has a whole list of heavy hitter actors in it, so it was bound to be a good story. Add to that the fact that it was not merely a fictional story, but one based in fact.

As someone who always has appreciated history – the good, the bad and the ugly – I knew the story was going to be ugly because it dealt with how the Native people were treated by the Europeans who “discovered” and settled the U.S.

The movie was a long one, and yes, it did cover a terrible time in the nation’s history but I was somewhat surprized by the movie, too. I found myself telling everyone when they asked, “It wasn’t what I expected.”

Oh, I expected the story to be what it was, but the pace of the movie was slower, maybe more thoughtful (?) than I expected it to be. It was unsettling because it reminded me of those folks who would rather white-wash our history than to present the truth. I can see why they would want to do that, but I can also see the harm that would do, as well.

Many have asked me if I liked the movie or not and that is difficult to answer, because of the subject matter. It was a tough movie to watch – the violence, the greed, the lack of care for human life – we haven’t come very far from any of that, have we?

Some say the movie and the leading actors may be contenders for the Oscars and other awards this season – I wonder…. I’m glad it’s not my decision.

See you at the movies!
