Apples are another reason to love fall. Not only are they pretty, but they are good for you and tasty. There is a Michigan based apple company that brings apples to ND, and they usually stop in Devils Lake at least once. We picked up apples when they were here at the beginning of October, so it has me thinking about all things apple.

Apple pie, apple dumplings, apple cake, apple crisp… there are so many delicious fall treats to make with apples and today I’d love to share one of our favorites. Apple crisp. I adapted this recipe because there was so much sugar that it wasn’t even that good anymore. So, with a little adapting it allows that apple flavor to come through but also provides a sweet note with the gooey cinnamon sugar.

Fresh Apple Crisp

8 apples (about 8 cups), sliced

¾ cup granulated sugar

2 T flour

1 tsp cinnamon

½ cup water

1 cup oatmeal

1 cup flour

2/3 cup brown sugar

1 tsp baking soda

½ cup butter, melted

Place the apples in a 9”x13” pan. In a small bowl mix together the granulated sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Pour this over the apples. Then take the water and pour over the apples also. In a medium bowl mix the remaining dry ingredients then add the melted butter and cut into the dry ingredients. Spread this mixture over the top of the apple mixture and bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 50-60 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.

Sugar Note: You might need to adjust the sugar amounts depending on the sweetness of your apples. The apples that I used the above sugar amounts for were honey crisp, so a sweet apple. For a tart apple I would increase the granulated sugar to 1 ¼ cups.

Serve this apple crisp with a side of cool whip or ice cream and you have a perfect fall dessert. If you want the peeling to go even faster look into purchasing an apple peeler. They are handy especially if using it to peel a firmer apple. They peel, core, and slice the apple. You can usually find them at Home of Economy.
