When Fall approaches I find myself ready for change. I become ready for a new normal and a chance to “slow down” a little bit. You may be wondering why I put quotation marks around “slow down?” As you may have guessed ranch life never fully slows down. As I am reminded our animals don’t care if it’s the Fourth of July or Christmas Day, they still need to eat.
School has begun again, we are homeschooling our oldest and doing unstructured preschool with our 4 year old. Fall means more routine, more structure. I am the type of person who loves knowing what is coming next. The boys have gotten into a routine where they know what is expected of them each week day, for this I am grateful!
I love my calendar and visually seeing the weeks/months ahead of me. One, mainly so I don’t forget anything, but also so I can see all that we have accomplished! Fall also means changing of season attire, slippers and all things orange! The other day I made carrot cake with cream cheese frosting (my first time ever) with carrots from my garden. I must say it was very good and that I may make it again, a big hit in the Myrvik household.
Fall also means washing and putting equipment away, getting last minute projects done on the ranch. We do lots of talking about processing dates for our customers and discussing breeding groups for our up coming lambing in March. Speaking of breeding groups, we had a neighbor AI our two heifers! They seem to have taken which means we will have calves at the end of May!
There are many things in the Fall that I miss by not living in Minnesota where I grew up. I miss apple orchards, pumpkin patch’s and spending hour’s making all things “Apple” with my mom, sisters and nieces. Family time is so special, even more so now that we are living six hours away. We thankfully see each other every 8-9 weeks whether they come up or if we get a chance to go down.
I hope you enjoyed a glimpse into our everyday life now a days! Our lambs and cows are doing well and that is all we can ask! Do you enjoy lamb? Please support your local ranchers.
