Let’s celebrate mental health awareness

I love the billboard that says, “Do you have a brain? Then you have mental health!”

Such a concise way to say, “Hey folks! We all have brains so we’re all in this together!!

May is officially the month to celebrate mental health awareness and has been since 1949! Right?! Who knew it’s been going on that long?!

The “Twibbon” (those little double ribbon pins that are colored for different causes) for May Mental Health month is green. So, what can you do to celebrate May is Mental Health Month? I’m so glad you asked! Here are some ideas:

• Get a green Twibbon and wear it in May – every day.

• Post on your Facebook a profile pic of you wearing your green Twibbon.

• Check out Each Mind Matters (EMM) videos at www.eachmindmatters.org/stories and share a story if you like.

• Take the online pledge to stamp out mental illness stigma at www.eachmindmatters.org and share it with your social media.

• Add a lime green Twibbon to your email signature and link to www.eachmindmatters.org.

• Have your employees wear lime green or decorate their workstations in lime green for the month of May.

• Feature stories, resources, and information from Each Mind Matters about mental health in your company newsletter or e-blast.

• Write an op-ed about facts about mental health issues in the Devils Lake Journal (hmmmm, what a great idea!)

• Tell everyone you know and/or see that “May is a month dedicated to help raise awareness about mental health issues, promote good mental health practices, and encourage people to support others around them.”

Remember – we all have brains so we’re all in this together! Thank you so much!

Kathryn Gewont served as school psychologist for Lake Region Special Education for 30 years before her retirement. May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting mental wellness across communities, a tradition established in 1949 by Mental Health America (then the National Association for Mental Health) to highlight the importance of mental health, celebrate recovery, and provide resources for those affected by mental illness.
