We escaped! We’ve been waking up in a place that was gifted to us on a horse ranch in Las Vegas, Nevada. We’ve been coming here for years. That husband of mine’s friend since the second grade gifted us the casita on their property. It’s more like a resort here. There are water fountains, a swimming pool, blooming plants and grapevines, and when I open the back door my vision turns to nothing but love! Two Arabian horses and a mini donkey greet me with the enthusiasm I wish every human greeted other humans with.
Even before I open the back door, the mini donkey might hear me flush the toilet and immediately begins a loud, obnoxious Hee Haw because he knows he’s soon going to get snuggles! His name is Wilson and he looks rather like a cartoon character donkey. His eyes and ears seem gigantic to me and his personality is equally as colossal. The painted mare is named Maggie. Maggie and I have a peculiar spirit connection. Once I step into their space, Maggie sees me and begins to trot on over. I tell them all good morning and just then Maggie comes and lays her face firmly against mine. It’s as if she’s wanting to feel how I’m feeling at that moment and at the same time she’s dosing me with a love that I’ve only felt from Jesus.
The other horse is named Destiny. He is named that because he was destined to be part of this herd. He came from the ranch of Wayne Newton. Once Destiny sees that Maggie’s face is on my cheek, he rushes over to my other cheek and they sandwich my face between them until I pull away. I excuse myself from the love fest to run into the casita to cut up one apple into 12 thin pieces. I could do what most people do and just give them each a little apple of their own. But I want them to feel like they are getting lots of love from me.
We feed the people we love, so we should feed the horses and donkeys we love, too! I don’t want them to have too much sugar so sometimes I take a long carrot and break it off into three pieces. If I have to eat my vegetables, so do they!
This morning I opened the back door and we completed our routine love dance. I’m a sensitive soul and it suddenly hit me that when humans fail at meeting even the basic expectations of relationships, animals exceed them! It’s as if they are sent to innately know what we need in any instance.
I was recently hurt by people I love and it made me mightily aware that it’s okay to walk away and walk right into a fenced-in area with two horses and a mini donkey instead. They call it “horse sense” for a reason.
The other morning I was curious and so I walked in the horses area and immediately fell to the ground. The painted mare rushed over and began pulling the back of my waistband up tempting to get me to stand upright again. How many times in life have humans kicked us when we are already down instead of attempting to pick us up by the waist bands of our pants like this horse did?
Despite being in a warm, sunny climate I dare to admit that I have been feeling a little down. I do it to myself. I listen to the news too much and read too many headlines. To a highly sensitive human this is like abusing myself. I feel way too much and that’s a burden to carry. So I opted to go to therapy by walking out with the horses and donkey and simply sitting in their sand while they walk over to lean against me. The God of the animals is always present while I bask in the presence of the purest form of love.
If your heart feels broken, depressed, or hurt and humans only seem to exasperate all of those things- come and sit with me a spell. Expect to be slain in your spirit by the God of animals when He doses you with so much of the good stuff that you find yourself crying for no other reason then an all-encompassing love cocooning you! Today we’re driving to Lake Havasu, Arizona. It will be 80 degrees there.
My blue mood from humans is already yellow from the animals. And now I get to sit at a lake with the yellow sun accenting my divine mood. And all because two horses and a mini-donkey were sent to heal me!
