Virginia Foote, 89, New Town, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 2020, at a Garrison hospital. Virginia Mary was born Oct. 9, 1931, on a farm near Saint Michael, ND, to Joseph and Matilda (Lohnes) Alberts; the youngest of nine children. Her traditional name was “Ichahdiya” in Dakota or “I’haadahaa ‘gu-sh” in Hidatsa, meaning “Step Aside for Her”. She attended Saint Michael School and spoke only Indian. In 1961, she married Adrian Foote in Los Angeles; they blended their family of four boys and two girls. They soon moved to a farm near Parshall, ND, to be closer to family. They were named Foster Parents of the Year, for fostering over 100 children from around the reservation. Family life remained important. When Adrian passed way in 2008, they had been married for 47 years. She enjoyed visiting, reading, word-finds, quilting, drawing, and watching TV. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by; children, Gary Foote (Lyda), Denise DeMontigny (Mark), Adrian Foote Jr., Blaine Foote (Mary), Joni Foote, Tony Foote, and Dustin Foote (Tyann); adopted son, Ronnie (Clarise) Medicine Crow, and all her adopted children; adopted brother, Delvin Driver Sr. (Kaye); 23 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by; grandparents, Ipagemani George Alberts and Tunkansaicayewin, Edward Lohnes and Mary (Waanatan) Lohnes; parents, Joseph and Matilda (Lohnes) Alberts; husband, Adrian Foote, Sr.; infant daughter, Jeanetta Marie; sisters, Julia (Alberts) Anderson, Catherine (Alberts) Thumb; brothers, George Alberts, Michael (Brownie) Cavanaugh, Roumould Alberts, Edward Alberts, Ambrose Alberts, Dan Alberts, Xavier Alberts; grandsons, Dallas B. Foote, Gary Dusty “Bear” Foote, Christopher Blaine Foote. Her Funeral Mass was held Thursday, Dec. 3 St. Bridget Catholic Church, Parshall with burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery, Raub.
