OBIT: Virgil Anderson

Virgil Anderson, 89, of rural Leeds, ND passed away at his home under the care of hospice on Sunday, September 27, 2020. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at 10 a.m. at Leeds Lutheran Church with Pastor Sharon Baker officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at the Leeds Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Leeds Lutheran Cemetery: P.O. Box 76, Leeds, ND 58346. Virgil was born August 3, 1931 to Emil W. and Jennie (Hanson) Anderson in rural Rugby, ND. He was baptized at Bethel Lutheran Church in rural Rugby and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Rugby. Virgil’s education started in the one room country school. He attended Rugby High School, NDSU in Fargo, Minot Business College and the Air Force Finance School. Vigil and Amy Stutrud were married April 6, 1952. After a short honeymoon, Amy continued teaching in Upham, ND. Virgil finished his overseas tour in France. Amy followed Virgil to California to complete his term in the Air Force. The couple purchased a farm 4 miles east of Leeds, ND. Three children were born to this union: Mark, Barbara and Duane. Virgil served his community in numerous leadership capacities including ASC committee, FMHA Board, Benson County representative to the Minot Experiment Station, Leeds School Board, Leeds Township Board, BTR Farmers Coop Board, Leeds Pasta Plant Board and the Benson County Farm Bureau Board. Virgil served on most of the boards of the Leeds Lutheran Church including two terms as chairman. Virgil also asked to run on the Republican Ticket for the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1982. Virgil and Amy received two awards during their time farming: the Devils Lake JayCees Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1966 and the Benson County Soil Conservation Award in 1979. Virgil is survived by his wife 68 years, Amy; children, Mark Anderson of Prior Lake, MN, Barbara (Larry) Swingen of Fargo, ND and Duane (Lisa) Anderson of Leeds, ND; sister, Janice; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil W. and Jennie Anderson; sister, Eunice Sitter of Fargo, ND; brother, Roger Anderson of Santa Maria, CA.
