Ruth Ann (Neconish) Lohnes aka “Maza Winyan” (Dakota Name: Iron Woman), age 81, of Fargo, ND (Formerly of Saint Michael, ND) began her journey on the early afternoon of Saturday, January 8, 2022, at the Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND, with her family by her side.

Ruth was born on February 17, 1940, to Joseph Neconish and Marie (Grignon) Neconish in Keshena, WI. She was raised in Neopit, WI (Menominee Nation) and attended local schools there. In 1957, Ruth was living and working in Chicago, Il, when she met David Lohnes. They married and eventually moved to Minneapolis, MN, where they lived for several years. In 1966, Ruth and David moved to Saint Michael, ND (Spirit Lake Nation) and raised their six children (David, Jr., Douglas, Daniel, Dana, Lisa, and Pamela) there.

Ruth enjoyed children and worked many years as a grade schoolteacher and many remembering having her as a teacher. She had many different occupations throughout her life, but teaching was her passion. She always encouraged her children, grandchildren, and students to strive for as much education and studied Elementary Education at Grand Canyon State College and at Arizona State University

Daniel, David Jr., and his family, Lisa and Pamela, all eventually moved to Phoenix to be near her. Ruth was delighted to have her family there and she was able to help in the raising of her grandchildren (Dusty, Ashley, Dylan, Tahnee, and Dane), which was her greatest joy.

Ruth loved to host birthday parties, family get-togethers and other special events. She loved to sing, share her stories and fun adventures. Everyone loved her fry bread and her special dishes that she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Ruth also made a lot of life-long friends, and they often would share fond memories her.

The summer of 2021, Ruth’s youngest granddaughter, Deana Lohnes of Washington, made a surprise visit to see her in Fargo, ND. This made her day as she had not seen Deana in several years and she was very happy and to see how much she had grown. Ruth also reconnected with her granddaughter, Dani Lohnes, in the fall/winter of 2021. They spent time together cooking meals, baking, watching movies and just enjoying each other’s company. Ruth often looked forward to Dani’s visits. Her special grandson, Dane Allopowa, was a big part of her life. He was always there for her, making sure she was cared for and had what she needed. Ruth adored all of her grandchildren and each and every one had a special place in her heart.

Ruth is survived by her sons, David Lohnes, Jr., Douglas Lohnes, Daniel (Ruby) Lohnes, Dana Lohnes; her daughters, Lisa (Vincent) Romero and Pamela Lohnes; 21 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; her sisters, Romaine (Orland) Delabrue and LeeAnn Nacotee; She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families.
