James Duane Gangl, 82 of Berthold, ND, passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at Edgewood in Mandan, after a seven month battle with illness.

James “Jim” was born on June 14, 1939, son of John and Mary (Uhlenkamp) Gangl in Starkweather, ND. Jim grew up on the family farm near Starkweather along with his 10 siblings. He graduated from Starkweather High School and Ackers Business College in Grand Forks.

Jim was united in marriage to Lorena Christopherson on February 5, 1966. To this union the couple had a son, Lawrence John, born in October of 1966. They lived in Warren, MN until moving to Berthold in 1978.

Jim started his working career in farming but decided to move on and attended Ackers Business School where he received a degree in accounting/bookkeeping. He worked as a bookkeeper at an equipment dealership and trucking company in Warren. In 1978, Jim and his family relocated to Berthold where he worked as a heavy equipment diesel mechanic. He had no formal mechanic education but learned it on his own and made it a 30-year career, retiring in 2010 to spend more time with his wife and family.

After Lorena’s passing, Jim continued to live in Berthold and enjoyed playing cards several times a week, attending nearby steak night suppers with friends, and driving around to check out the local crops. Jim was also a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church.

Jim’s passion was spending time with family. In his early years he enjoyed outdoor activities; riding snowmobile, fishing, and spending time at his cabin at Van Hook. His biggest passion was his three grandchildren. He especially enjoyed one-on-one time with the grandkids; taking golf cart rides through town and teaching them to play cards. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their athletics, hardly missing a game from early elementary through the collegiate level. Jim was an exemplary grandparent that provided the love, support, guidance, and direction, much like a parent would, and was never shy about sharing his opinion of what they should and shouldn’t do. He and Lorena were guiding lights in their grandchildren’s lives as they developed into great young adults.

Mandan, ND; Siblings: Ann Hunt, Devils Lake; Irene Krebsbach, Cando; Mary Lou (Joe) Belford, Devils Lake as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
