Barbara Ann Drake, age 64 of rural Waco, NE died Friday, October 29, 2021 at Norfolk, NE surrounded by family.

Barbara Ann Pherson-Drake was born November 18, 1956 to Ernest and Harriet (Carlson) Pherson in Fargo, ND at St. John's Hospital. Barbara was baptized by Rev. Gjerrnes (who also had baptized Barbara's mother). Barb attended elementary school at Horace Mann for K & 1st grade, then Washington Elementary for 2nd through 6th grade. She continued her early schooling at Ben Franklin Junior High School for grades 7-9, then attended high school at North High School graduating with the class of 1975. Barb attended North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND obtaining a BS degree in 1979 majoring in Child Development and Family Relations, and minors in Social Work and Sociology. Barbara Pherson married David Drake December 28, 1979 in Sisseton, SD with a blessing of a civil ceremony December 29, 1979 in Fargo, ND. To this union sons Derek Drake of Lincoln, NE and Dustin (Staci) Drake of Waco, NE were born, and blessed as her family were her two step-daughters Christine (Ronald) Van Ausdal of Cheney, WA and Bobbie (Brian) Kommes of Howard, SD. Barb's employment career included Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Fargo, ND, Cornerstone Bank, US Census Bureau, Drake Inc., and Blue Valley Community Action: Head Start.

Barb served her community with her nineteen years of service as a member of the Village of Thayer Board, and as a member of York County Health Department, York County Extension 4-H leader Board and Farmerettes. She was a Zion Lutheran Church member and served as Sunday School teacher, VBS teacher/superintendent, along with LWML and occasional choir director and member. Barb's time was spent with family and friends, self-improvement through workshops/classes/conferences, having coffee or meeting for lunch with friends, reading, crafting, and traveling.

Barb leaves behind her children and their spouses, nine step-grandchildren, sisters-in-law: Maribeth (Scott) Bradley, Dawn Drake, Holly Pherson, five nephews and one niece. Passing before Barbara were her parents, her husband David, her brother Leon Pherson, her mother and father in-law, brother-in-law Chip Drake, sister-in-law Jan Drake. Left to grieve along with the family are beloved dogs Smoky and Beau.

A Memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, November 5, 2021 at St Peter Lutheran Church in Gresham. Inurnment will follow in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Thayer. It was Barb's wish to be cremated so there will be no viewing, however you are welcome to sign her register book from 1-8:00 pm on Thursday. Her family will greet guests from 6-7:30 pm that same evening at the mortuary in York. Condolences may be sent to her family at www.metzmortuary.com. Memorials may be sent to Metz Mortuary and will be used toward a community or youth program to be decided by the family.
