Sharon Penelope Lawrence

Devils Lake - Sharon Penelope Lawrence, past resident of Devils Lake, daughter of long-time residents Dr. Vernon and Floris Otis, and sister of Gregory Otis, passed away at her home in the Dallas area on Wednesday, September 22nd. She is survived by her husband John M. Lawrence, and her two children, Danielle and Cheryl, and her son-in-law, John Laine. Penny, as she was known by family and friends, lived a long life of adventure and learning. She left home in 1962 with her husband, a career enlisted man in the U.S. Army. Many years of living overseas ensued in places ranging from France to Germany to the United Kingdom. Penny loved to travel and experience new places, people, and cultures. In 1985, she earned a BS in Business from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, and worked in finance and billing in the healthcare industry for many years. Penny also passed on her interest in medicine to her children, who both worked in the field for many years. Penny was part of a strong matrilineal line in the family, passing many of these characteristics from her mother, Floris Otis, on to her children. She was a woman of ideals and manners, yet also quiet determination. She could disagree without being disagreeable, and extended graciousness to all in her purview. Penny had a playful spirit and convivial attitude about life, enjoying good conversations, good food, and good drinks along the way. While little of her adult life was spent in her hometown, she never lost touch with it or the people in her life from it. It's been said that life takes us to unexpected places, but love brings us home. In many ways, a part of Penny was always in Devils Lake. While she and her mother are probably in heaven right now having a cocktail in the bar of the 313, she will be sorely missed by the friends and family she leaves behind.
