Carol Ann Finney

Carol Ann Finney, 91, passed away on September 24, 2021, at Citrus Heights Terrace Memory Care Facility in California. Carol Ann Anderson was born on July 21, 1930, in Devils Lake, North Dakota, and baptized in St. Olaf's Lutheran Church. Carol was the daughter of Emelia Kandt of Kief, ND, and John Christian Anderson (Jens Christian Andresen) of Rødekro, Denmark. Carol was very proud of her heritage, particularly her German family, who immigrated via Russia in 1899. Most of her 11 maternal aunts and uncles were born in Atmajea, Romania, and came to the United States with her grandparents, Martin Kandt and Fredericka Mehrer, aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm in 1899. They were founding members of the Rosenfeld Baptist Church. Carol had an older brother, Jack Anderson, whom she adored.

Carol attended Washington Elementary School, Central School, and Central High School in Devils Lake, ND. The Anderson family moved to Oakland, California, and Carol graduated from Oakland High School with honors, earning a creative writing scholarship. In 1951, Carol earned her AA in business from Stockton Junior College on the College of the Pacific campus. She was married to John Finney from 1956 to 1969; they raised three children together in Walnut Creek and Lafayette, CA. Sadly, their marriage ended in divorce. Carol enjoyed working for the Contra Costa Sun newspaper and the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church.

In recent years, Carol was cared for by her children until she required 24-hour care for Alzheimer's Dementia. In keeping with her giving nature, Carol's last act of generosity was her body donation to the University of California Davis Medical School. She is survived by her children, Sam Finne, Susan Colwell, and Amanda Finney; her grandchildren, Erik and Anne Finne, Katherine, Peter, and Madeline Colwell, and Charlie Finney; her sister-in-law, Sandy Anderson; her former daughter-in-law, Claire Finne; her grandson-in-law, Pete Giannino; and her son-in-law, Rob Colwell. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, John and Emily Anderson, and her brother Jack.
